Teddington has been supplying cryogenic bellows for LNG carriers, from the very first - the Methane Pioneer - in 1959, to modern day heavy-duty carriers!

Cryogenic Tankers

Cryogenic tankers are specialised ships designed to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG). These tankers are equipped with insulated tanks to keep the LNG at extremely low temperatures, typically around -162°C (-260°F) or lower, to maintain its liquid state. LNG is transported in its liquid form because it occupies about 1/600th of the volume it would as a gas, making it more economical to ship. LNG tankers play a critical role in the global energy market, enabling the transportation of natural gas from production sites to consumers around the world.

Bellows and Expansion Joints in Cryogenic Tankers

Bellows and expansion joints are crucial components in cryogenic tankers, including LNG carriers. These components accommodate the thermal expansion and contraction that occurs due to the extreme temperature variations involved in storing and transporting LNG. They absorb movements and vibrations, ensuring the integrity and safety of the piping systems. Cryogenic expansion joints are specifically designed to handle the low temperatures and prevent leaks, thereby maintaining the safety and efficiency of the LNG transportation process.

Teddington’s Cryogenic Bellows Expansion Joints

At Teddington Engineered Solutions, we have a long history of innovation in cryogenic expansion joints. We were approached to design, manufacture and supply cryogenic bellows for the first every LNG carrier, The Methane Pioneer, which entered service in 1959. This pioneering project presented numerous challenges, as it required materials and designs capable of withstanding extremely low temperatures and maintaining flexibility and durability.

Challenges and Solutions

Designing cryogenic bellows expansion joints involves several significant challenges:

Material Selection: Conventional materials could not withstand the extremely low temperatures without becoming brittle. We select specialised alloys known for their low-temperature resilience and high strength.

Seal Integrity: Ensuring airtight seals at cryogenic temperatures is critical to prevent leaks. We develop advanced welding techniques and high-precision manufacturing processes to achieve perfect seals, and allow full penetration x-ray analysis to ensure we have done a good job.

Thermal Contraction: Accommodating the thermal contraction of materials when exposed to cryogenic temperatures requires precise engineering calculations. We design the expansion joints to absorb these contractions without compromising structural integrity.

Flexibility and Durability: The expansion joints need to remain flexible and durable despite the harsh conditions. We conduct extensive fatigue and destructive testing in cryogenic temperatures simulating duty conditions, and use innovative design features to enhance their longevity and performance.

Standards and Compliance: We hold type approval with every major certifying body in this sector.

Experience

Following our success with the initial cryogenic tankers, Teddington Engineered Solutions has continued in the production of cryogenic expansion joints for LNG tankers all over the world.

We have supplied these critical components to many projects, including the first LNG tankers built in Korea and China, as well as hundreds of other projects in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Such units can range from very small bore or up to two meters, and no matter what, are capable of reaching temperatures of -162°C or lower, and adhere to the classifications of Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, American Bureau of Shipping and more. Our cryogenic bellows and expansion joints are known for their reliability and performance in extreme conditions.

Conclusion

At Teddington Engineered Solutions, we pride ourselves on our ability to solve complex engineering challenges and provide high-quality solutions for the LNG industry. From our pioneering work in 1959 to our ongoing projects with modern LNG tankers, we have consistently delivered innovative and reliable cryogenic expansion joints. Our commitment to excellence and our expertise in the field ensure that we remain at the forefront of the industry, helping to safely and efficiently transport LNG across the globe. Our cryogenic bellows and expansion joints are integral to the functionality and safety of LNG tankers, making us a trusted partner in the cryogenic and LNG transportation industry.
